Ethernet network at PSI housing complex

The majority of staff members of the Program Systems Institute have their dwelling in a compact area comprising 6 apartment houses in downtown Pereslavl-Zalessky, about 7km away from PSI campus. The project "Polnet", started by the Telecommunication laboratory BOTIK in December 1996, is related to building and maintaining a high-speed local network in PSI housing complex.

Currently (March 1998) Polnet serves 57 users in 7 different houses (including one networker who lives nearby in a regular Russian izba) -- and this number is going to increase.

The network consists of several Ethernet cables, two local routers and a 2Mbps radio-modem connecting one of the routers to the central regional IP server pier.botik.ru. The network is also hooked on the 10Mbps optical fiber backbone which ensures its connection to the building of the University of Pereslavl, the telephone switching station and the modem pool that serves dial-up lines in the city.
