I don't see the reference to DOS in the message, but here are a
couple of general comments. I've seen a formula set with WordPerfect
(and published as a gee-whizz ain't it clever!). I was not impressed;
the attempt at "x-bar", a fundamental notation in statistics, left
the bar half way between the x and the adjacent variable. Visual design
is not a good technique for reproducing formulae. That's why I use
and recommend TeX, a markup system in which a formula is described in
much the way you would read it, and the visual interpretation includes
many detailed typesetting rules. This approach also has the benefit
that formulae, which are written in plain ascii characters, can be
transmitted by Email and recreated accurately at a receiving site.
TeX is available as public domain packages for both Macs and PCs
(OzTeX and emTeX respectively) but I received on Friday a publicity
leaflet for a near-WYSIWYG interface for TeX on a Mac - "a Mac TeX
interface that displays the finished page {\it as you type the text}".

Subject: Writeing Z with LaTeX

I though that some of the readers may be interested in a recent exchange
in the comp.specification.z newsgroup (or ZForum mail list):

 From: windley@cs.uidaho.edu (Phillip J. Windley)

The zed.sty file available from the Zforum uses msxm and msym fonts. I
don't know what these are. I (somehow) have the tfm files, but not the mf
files, so I can't makle them. Perhaps I screwed up the installation of
LaTeX or maybe never had them.

Where can I get the mf files for these fonts?

 From: pjk@scm.tees-poly.ac.uk

The msxm and msym files are extended maths symbols that come as part of the
AMSFonts (2.0) package. In the Aston arcive they are stored at
  \amstex\amsfonts\sources\symbols\*.mf

Persionally I prefer to use the OZ style option as it allows me more freedom
with my notation. I have modified it slightly such that it is fully
  compatiable with the zed.sty option.

  Peter Knaggs

 From: d.love@daresbury.ac.uk (Dave Love)

Actually they're from the first addition AMSfonts package, not 2.0, and the
sources are not there -- they were for an obsolete version of METAFONT.
AMSfonts 2.0 has different glyphs, especially a different style of
  blackboard bold.

Possible sources for the msx/msy tfm and pk files include anonymous ftp to
labrea.stanford.edu or sun.soe.clarkson.edu or mail to
archive-server@sun.soe.clarkson.edu. They are in the Aston archive under
  [.fonts.amsfonts], accessible by mail to texserver@uk.ac.tex (@tex.ac.uk
from outside JANET) or JANET NIFTP with user/password `public'. Send
`HELP' to texserver to start with or log on to uk.ac.tex from JANET.

[Having AMSfonts 2.0 installed probably implies using the new font
selection scheme in LaTeX and unless zed.sty has changed recently it won't
work as distributed with the new scheme. It can be fixed to work with
either, however, and the new one allows you to do things like use zed.sty
with SLiTeX or with PostScript text fonts.]

The following files are aviliable from oxford for processing Z in LaTeX:

fuzz Order form for "fuzz" Z style for LaTeX + type-checker
zed.sty A LaTeX style option for writing Z documents
zguide.tex A guide to the above style
msfonts Information on obtaining the msx/msy fonts for zed.sty
oz.sty A LaTeX style option for writing Z & Object-Z documents
oz.tex A guide to the above style
threecolumn.sty A style option used by "oz.tex" (if you don't have it)

foil.sty A LaTeX style for overhead projector foils
zedfoil.sty A LaTeX style option for Z overhead projector foils
foil.tex An example of using the above two style files

To obtain the files zed.sty and zguide.tex send a mail message containing the
line:

send z zed.sty zguide.tex

to archive-server@uk.ac.oxford.prg (note that the subject line should be
blank).

Subject: M&S Font Selection Scheme

I would like to know how to determine if text is being set in italics or
roman.

e.g

The sentence

GWR No. 3440 City of Truro, here shown departing Toddington.

If the text is set in \it I want to enclose the name in quotes. If the text
is being set in roman the I do not want quotes but would like City of Truro
set in italics.

Any ideas please.

Ah yes: reminds me of so many Saturdays spent on Paddington station!

>From lfonts.tex:
\def\em{\protect\pem{}}
\def\pem{\ifdim \fontdimen\@ne\font >\z@ \rm \else \it \fi}

This works because \fontdimen 1 is the "slope per pt" of a font.

OK?

I read an article a few days ago about TeX packages, and your JANET
address was given as a source of information. Is it possible to get a copy
of TeX or LaTeX for the Atari 1040STFM and the Atari 1040STEFM??

                Thanks

Subject: Laserwriter IIg

I have just installed an upgrade from the II NTX to IIG. Oztex now offsets
the output page by almost 4 inches in the horizontal direction and almost 6
inches in the vertical direction.

TeXtures does not suffer from this problem.

I assume it is because OzTeX looks for the old laser writer chooser
extension. I have both the old one (with a space) and the new one
(without), am using System 7. Before the printer upgrade it worked OK and
if I send the output to another laser on the network, everything works
fine.

Any ideas please?

Does anyone know of extensions to the Mac print menu when a linotronic is
selected (with TeXtures). I need for example emulsion down (for film). To
set paper size and get cutmarks, to set screens etc.

I have just put an update for my verbatim style option into the Aston
archive. The main change, apart from a correction in the
documentation, is to make \verb work in math mode as well. The files
can be found in
